THE BELL TOWER AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE
The bell tower was built in 1636 and originally had a cupola in the form of a veil. There were two bells, the great bell and the small bell.
The great bell was provided by Gaetano D'Amore on the 23rd of February, 1703, who paid for it with an old bell and 50 ducats given by Father Carl'Antonio D'Urso. The small bell was a gift of Father Gaetano Cutinella on the occasion of his first Mass.
Many times the tower has been rocked by quakes and once during the feast of the Madonna of the Mountains the great bell broke loose and caused quite a panic among the faithful who were present. During the earthquake of 1980 the tower was almost totally destroyed as can be seen from the photograph.
