The high altar was once
made of very old and worm eaten wood but was replaced by
a marble altar in 1711 at a cost of 475 ducats. It was
built by the artist Salvatore Martinez according to the
plans, and under the direction of Francesco Solimene.
Mr. Solimene had already in the same year designed the
high altar for the Treasure Chapel of St. Gennaro in the
Cathedral, also the altar for the church of St. Martino
and the balustrade in the presbytery of the church of St.
Mary of the Mountains. However, because of lack of funds
this work wasn't finished until 1737 by Giuseppe
Bastelli.
In 1757, at a cost of 50 ducats, the three steps were
enlarged by the marbel worker Domenico Antonio Troccolo. |
